Paul and Solomon Contrasted
By O. Allen Bailey
"Remember thy Creator (Christ) in the days of thy youth."
"..Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things
are become new." Eccl 12:1, 2 Cor 5:17, Gal 6:15
..behold, a greater than Solomon is here. (Jesus) - Mat 12:42
..Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (Jesus) - Mat. 6:29
...For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. - John 1:17
...For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
(Paul) - Rom 8:3-4
"...(Ye) Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of me..."(Jesus) - John 5:39
I am indebted to Elder H. H. Lefferts for some inspiration and understanding on this from an article of his
published in the SIGNS OF THE TIMES in 1932. I had read it several times, but when I read it just before
I composed the poem, I seemed to see several things in it that I had never seen before.
(11's)
My friends, now please bear with me, while I extol,
The merits of Jesus, His Love for our soul,
That passes all knowledge, He on us may roll;
May this Understanding be always our goal:
The Preacher in Jerusalem wrote of old,
Three books of the Bible, in words very bold;
One book, the type Adam, his love for His bride, (Canticles)
The other, shows Wisdom, As through earth we stride. (Proverbs)
Chorus:
O, sing of His Grace below -
He now on us bestows,
Sing of His Mighty Love - Mighty to save.
The book called Ecclesiastes, I would show,
Leaves man under the Law, forlorn here below;
Many have perused this legal preacher's book,
Seeking their Life in these thoughts he undertook.
Books of the Bible are not equal in scope,
And all are not the same, in which we place hope;
All that is spoken by characters therein,
Must be divided, as God's Grace is from sin;
All Scripture is giv'n, as God pleased to reveal,
And what God saw good, in the new heart instill;
And in children are giv'n a light to shine through
That which is darkened, And hidden from earth's view.
Believer, now think, when you've read this book through,
Are you uplifted, as the flower with the dew;
Or left in dejection, with your heart cast down,
Your mind in depression, on your face a frown.
In the Scriptures which the Holy Ghost did guide,
Are the words of the righteous, from which men hide;
There spoken also, the words of this world's wise,
Compared with the words of those over earth's skies.
Even old Satan has his words placed therein,
And all the false teachers, that can't cease from sin;
Along with the record, God gave of His Son,
And all of His dealings with men as they run.
The glory in earth, that shined in His dear Son,
And the works that He did, when through earth did run;
And hanged on the tree to remove all our sin,
And gave us the news, which our heart doth now win.
His word though complete, but diversified book,
As His Own Spirit, with Wisdom undertook;
And showing all sides of man's life here below,
The good and the bad, as His Purpose bestow.
In the Book called Job, an angel is first seen,
But not that sweet Angel on whom our souls' lean;
But the angel of trouble, sorrow and woe,
That brings most the conflict on sinners below.
And with him comes those, whom the truth would pervert,
With words to deceive, and to error convert;
Who profess to comfort, but can't reach Job's case,
His afflictions to soothe, or his sins erase.
Whom all, the Lord contemned, but one, Elihu,
When the judgment of God brought their case to view;
Against His own servant, Whom God blessed with truth,
He brought no censor, found in him no reproof.
If God did not sanction these false teacher's words,
Their specious arguments, our patient Job heard;
But God's Spirit within him could not condone,
Their offerings of wisdom, for sin to atone.
As all the false prophets with which earth is strewn,
Present a fair case, in appearance may loom;
But won't reach the poor sinner - dead to the Law,
Whom find that their goodness can't fix sins' old flaw.
And they may copy the true words of God,
Make a fair showing, where God's children may plod;
But their eye single, to God's glory, can't prove -
To preach Christ consistent, they can't carry through.
For their hearts are bounded with this old world's goods,
And their own righteousness untouched by God's floods-
Hold in their estimation, all of their goods,
Till the stronger Man enters where they once stood.
The Law's power is not of faith, then must be sin,
The Holy Apostle thus declares therein; Gal 3:12, Rom 14:23
So, then does the Preacher set forth Law or Grace?
And through his words, can we look upon Christ's face?
Does he square with the Holy Apostles Creed?
Can he give the water of Life that we need?
The Preacher finds us, and leaves under earth's sun,
Of the heavenlies, he can't speak - no, not one.
His viewpoint is confined to those under law,
All he sees is that, which God's judgments will draw;
Not one word is mentioned of the cross of Christ,
But all of his sentiment seems hard and iced.
The new creation he can just dimly see,
With only a hint, the Love of God so free;
Vanity, vanities, all is vanity,
Words, which are repeated, all of thirty-three.
He can't feel or see a Hope in Christ above,
Nor seems he finds a solace there in His Love;
He resolves that he must seek all here below,
And his bread, upon the waters of time sow.
His soul is firmly bound in legality,
Nor joys in Hope of his immortality;
They who seek a better place, a home above,
Cannot be satisfied with that he speaks of;
But their Hope is in the heavens, far away,
A Hope that greatly transcends their earthly stay;
Our life does not consist of the things we own,
Though our flesh is sustained where the flesh has sown.
And Jesus teaches, our own life we must hate,
And the hope of Heaven, earth, cannot with rate;
Whom are His children persuaded to believe?
Christ, or the Preacher, whose words do us now grieve?
And do we continue to wrestle with Law?
Which renders it's verdict on our every flaw;
As weary generations, that he speaks of,
So sin never releases those in it's power.
And then, our earth shall not abide forever,
For, from all that is earthly, Christ shall sever,
Our vain and vile body, in glory arise;
Mount over Sol's heaven, and over Sol's skies.
No more to taste "Vanity of Vanities",
But in Christ Jesus, our Lord we are set free;
Away have those heavens passed with a great sound,
With all legal preachers therein, are not found;
No Legalist found there, whom may mar our peace -
Christ paid our ransom, from this earth to release,
A greater than Solomon and Law is here,
With Grace that inspires, and delivers from fear;
But thank God for His Solomon, Whom did show,
That all Wisdom and riches, from God doth flow;
And saw his Christ's glory, although from afar,
Himself was a type of the only True Star.
Still need not a fair queen, from Sheba afar,
To speak of His glory, for we've seen His star;
It's Light shined within us, and showed us the Way,
And this Light will lead us to Eternal Day.
Sol died in conclusion of death by the Law, Gal 3:22
With all of the others, that it's sharp eye saw; Deut 32:50-52
Though he may tell us to keep it's pure demands,
Our flesh is too weak to close with it's commands;
But Jesus, there rather, fulfilled it's desire,
His Spirit within us, lifts out of Sol's mire;
Up to a new heaven, prepared by the Son,
And in a new earth, now with patience we run:
But with the Apostle, I daily die too,
For I am still riddled, with sin through and through;
But Jesus lives in me; His Spirit revives;
Because He loved me before all of these skies.
Chorus:
O, sing of His Grace below -
He now on us bestows,
Sing of His Mighty Love - Mighty to save.
