A friend said a few years ago;
"And record your mind's inditing
So that to others you might show;"

I feared contention and fighting,
Lest seeds of discord I might sow;
But still was my soul's delighting
Of my Lord's grace and mercy show;

To avoid strife and contention
Is the true Christian's way to seek;
Love and peace is their intention,
Before their God and man, so meek;

But not to God's truth, there slighting,
For we must earnestly contend -
Through the Spirit, here inciting
And the way of faith to defend.

For around we see a blighting
Of the love of truth, once held dear;
For most of the world is fighting
Against a God Whom they should fear.

-May feel we're only reciting
What so many times has been said;
-Or may fear the charge of righting
Where other's minds may have been led.

These discordant thoughts, still sighting
In my heart and mind to this day;
Still there is a spirit lighting
Here along my uneven way.

God gives His gifts at His pleasure
To those severally as He will;
It is Christ in them, their treasure,
His goodness in them to fulfill.

To speak a word to the weary,
That in faith and hope they might grow;
And to answer their heart's inquiry,
And God's Love and faithfulness show;

But we still are like old Moses
When God commands us now to go;
-To speak to kings or write proses,
Or His power in poetry show;

-Like Moses, still make excuses,
Though His glory and bush have seen;
His power our souls, He still uses,
E'en to return to Egypt's scene.

For He will provide an Aaron,
A mouthpiece, for us he shall be;
When our stamm'ring tongue is barren,
Aaron shall set the tune and key;

Then His words shall flow with sweetness,
And His great power shall flood our soul;
- Put all things in perfect neatness,
And our names in His house enroll;

Will raise our thoughts to His heaven,
Cause our hope and faith to press on;
- Purge out the flesh's old leaven,
To feel the cares of earth all gone.
