Not of Works, Lest Any Man Should Boast

"... For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty...." 1 Cor 1:21-27.

"...And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

"...Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you..." Acts 13:39-41.

"...Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you..." Hab 1:5.
"... I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me ..."Isa 63:3-5.

9.8.11.8

Let's now ask the important question,
That every child should need to know;
To every one that thinks themselves a Christian.
And would Christ's light and glory show;

What is the greatness need then for us,
What will increase our faith and strength?
Come now that we may this great issue discuss,
That some may come to truth at length.

It is to know that God did save us,
Now, it was God, and God alone;
We'll grow in grace when this is kept in focus,
Of other's help, God needs not one .

Of old, Thou did look down from Heaven,
Upon all of the sons of men;
Then, all condemned, in sin and death were given,
In darkness, minds overladen;

For we are born in nature's darkness,
And death has passed upon us all;
With our earthly father, share an alikeness,
From one blood upon this old ball.

Truth scuffs hard on the grain of nature,
For man will give all for his life;
And nature makes him a do-it-your-selfer,
-With this nature, the world is rife.

But, still there is The Great Sustainer,
-Himself may hide from nature's view;
And, no one of life, can be the retainer,
Or save, or keep their own soul too;

God had a Reason in His Purpose,
I'ts plainly taught in His Word too;
The Power and Glory did His Mind encompass,
That He should have all praise that's due.

God in Christ is the only Savior,
Beside Him, none are brought to view;
Nor can His Love and Power suffer a failure,
To fully save all He foreknew.

We render Him His Power and Honor,
Above the creature He stands too;
Of all our salvation, He is the Owner,
O, may we give Him praise that's due.

For this was not a joint agreement
Between our Lord and creature man;
Or left to the option of their achievement,
Or any of old Adam's clan.

Not in man's goodness or his closures,
Or any work he might perform;
Their repentance or faith, their means or measures,
Could in the least to Christ conform.

This is the Cause we sing with joy,
- Will rapture us in Heaven too;
View His Love and Power with transcendent glory,
If now we are His favored few.

Perhaps there are some whose faith is dim,
And from myself take lesser view;
Though their blinded hearts may over God's work skim,
His Power and Love can save these too;

If they are the objects of His Love,
Found in His covenant from Old;
In His Time will send His Spirit from above;
And make them in this truth so bold.

Renew their spirit and feed their soul,
And with His saints, their name enroll;
When from this way and His presense they may stroll ,
With this great truth, He'll these console;

He will set their feet on Zion's hill,
His promises in them instill;
With these great prospects, in their hearts He shall thrill,
And in His praise, they shall stand still.
