Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani?

"...He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from Him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah..." Psa 89:26-37

"...And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, Save thyself, and come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him. And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?..." Mark 15:28-34.

"...And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?..." Matt 27:37-46.

"...He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed..." Isa 53:3-5.

Why hast Thou forsaken me?

12’s

"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"
‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’
Did Jesus in agony cry upon the tree.
O! did He ask that my sins be forgiven me?

O! was it indeed for crimes that I had done,
My Savior bled and died and groaned upon the tree!
O! with what Love, this vain heart my Savior has won,
When with His blood and tears, He died to set me free!

O! now could I too bow my head in tears and shame,
The hardness of my old earthly heart now depart,
And He, now in heaven, brighten it with His flame,
To feel His Love, and that He gave to me His heart!

And with the blessed poet, I too, might now say:
‘Was it for crimes I had done, He groaned on the tree?’
O! may His kindness fill my heart with Love this day!
And may the knowledge of His Love, then set me free!

If it could be His dear Will, I forever live,
In Hope and Love upon this, my Dear Savior’s breast,
For God’s Grace, in Power and Love, did Jesus give,
That I, with Him, in glory reign, in endless rest.

"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"
‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’
What Love, Pow’r and Grace was revealed in old earth’s sky.
And sun paled before the scene of Christ on the tree!

When Christ constrains my heart with Love, joy and peace,
He makes me, all the trifles of this earth lay by;
To feel, that in Him, even Death gives sweet release,
Through the freedom that He gave, will no longer try.

Oh, Lord, in Thy faithfulness thou wilt chastise us,
But not to redeem our soul from the depths of sin;
For all of our salvation is in our Jesus,
And all of our soul’s redemption is found in Him.

We know, that in Him, even Death is swallowed up,
The grave, it’s vict’ry can’t boast, Death has lost it’s sting;
Then we in His mansions dwell, and of His cup sup,
While in these new heavens, our hearts’ with praises ring.

Condemnation that we feel by strength of the Law,
Jesus’ Love with Pow’r through grace, can ever remove,
Since He was lifted from the earth, and now will draw
His Own unto Him, and His Father’s Love then prove.

"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"
‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’
There His soul did travail, when He to God did cry;
When He through weakness was crucified on the tree.

Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?, He cried,
‘My soul thou hast forsaken, for them I must die;’
That they, I shall never forsake, for as my Bride,
My suffering and merit here, did them thus buy.
