Articles and Poems Emphasizing Free Grace And Divine Predestination

"...And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him..." 1 Ki 19:17-18.

"...Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work..." Rom 11:3.

"Shall the vile race of flesh and blood
Contend with their Creator, God ?
Shall mortal worms presume to be,
More holy, wise, or just than He ?

Behold, He puts His trust in none
Of all the spirits round His throne;
Their nature, when compared with His,
Are neither holy, just nor wise.

But how much meaner things are they
Who sprung from dust, and dwell in clay!
Touched by the finger of His wrath,
We faint and perish like the moth.

From night to day, from day to night,
We die by thousands in His sight;
Buried in dust, whole nations lie,
Like a forgotten vanity.

Almighty Power! To Thee we bow;
How frail are we! how glorious Thou!
No more the sons of earth shall dare
With an eternal God compare.

Isaac Watts

Grace, triumphant in the throne,
Scorns a rival, reigns alone!
Come, and bow beneath her sway,
Cast your idol-works away;
Works of man, when made his plea,
Never shall accepted be;
Fruits of pride, (vain glorious worm!)
Are the best he can perform.

Self, the god his soul adores,
Influences all his powers;
Jesus is a slighted name,
Self-advancement all his aim;
But when God the Judge shall come.
To pronounce the final doom,
Then for rocks and hills to hide
All his works and all his pride!

Still the boasting heart replies,
What! the worthy and the wise,
Friends to temperance and peace,
Have not these a righteousness?
Banish every vain pretence
Built on human excellence;
Perish ev'ry thing in man,
But the grace that never can.

William Cowper

Who Hath Known

Again,may I take up my pen,
Oh, may now the Spirit open,
The things that It now may present,
Although others 'round may dissent.

And like Jeremiah of old
Though many oppose, may grow bold;
Defame with fear on every side,
With him I fail to stem the tide.

"In His Name, I shall no more speak,"
When through this fear my soul grows weak;
But still His Word, shut in my bones,
As fire, it burns amidst my groans.

Most are given to love of self,
And all their glory to oneself;
For Jesus' sake they show no cause,
From men and self they never pause;

From love of self they cannot cease,
Through pride and their own fantasies;
But place the creature above God -
So serve and worship a mere clod.

They cannot love God as Supreme -
Find His Grace and Power all their theme;
As the Apostle truly said
When God the Spirit his mind led.

If our eye is not made single,
With His Grace our self will mingle;
With God's glory, love, grace and pow'r,
Our own vain nature to empower -

God is jealous of His Honor,
Of His Glory is sole Owner;
His praise to others will not give,
For of and to Him all things live.

He must be true, though men be liars,
Though their reproach as thorns and briars;
Who will vindicate all His Word
Which His Own Purpose has authored.

For it shall surely come to pass ,
To us may seem at an impasse -
Who hath fathomed His Holy Mind,
Or known a creature of His kind?

So, when reproved, like Job of old,
Pride and presumption grow so bold;
His Purpose question from of old -
But wait until His Will unfold;

Lay too, our hand upon our mouth,
And scan the world from north to south;
For we presume, but cannot know,
When not God's Will, to creatures show;

His Infinite Mind not reveal
To wise and prudent, but did seal -
His Reason He did not consign
That which His Purpose did confine;

Nor will the highest angel know
Beyond that which His Will shall show -
In wonder shall their minds be lost,
That God Himself Has borne the cost;

Whose Divine Purpose did not spare
His Son, with Whom none can compare;
Power, Love, and Grace did make it just
When Christ suffered for the unjust;

Children rejoice - His Will is done !
Rest in the merits of God's Son !
Who learned conformance to God's Will
And all God's Purpose did fulfill.

THE RACE IS NOT TO THE SWIFT

Ecc. 9:11

By Allen Bailey

They whom are called by grace shall know
While here they journey on;
Here they must bear both joy and woe,
And live in Christ alone.

His suff'rings too, must also know
While they're so far from home.

Again, their spirits must return
And view below the sun;
Again this lesson they must learn
While here their race they run.

That the race is not to the swift,
Nor battle to the strong;
Nor bread to those with wisdom's gift
Or wealth to these belong.

No special favor to the skilled
With all the work they've done;
For all the things in earth they build,
And all man's praise they've won.

Man can't determine his own time,
Because He's ruled by God;
For man is subject to his clime,
And to this earthly clod.

As fishes taken in a net,
And birds found in a snare,
So trouble will man's plans upset
And lay his prospects bare.

War may suddenly on them fall
When born in evil time;
Earth's pain and strife their souls appall
With tyrant's greed and crime.

With prosperity's decadence
Again through sin they fall;
Know the attending barreness,
That falls on nations all.

Satan has built his bulwarks there
Against God's chosen few;
Against their city laid his lair,
With his old retinue.

On this battlefield see Christ walk,
And there fulfill His will;
And sometimes to us He will talk,
With consolation fill;

For Time and Chance to man will come,
And happens to us all;
But here's the truth God gives to some,
When He to them does call:

Fate, Time and Chance, with Circumstance,
With God shall ne'r befall,
With Him there is no Happenstance,
Whose Mind before, saw all;

So with the wise man we behold,
That man can't find out God;
Or know His Purpose from of Old,
Though labor as he would.

His Purpose, angels can't assign,
Or say, "What doest Thou?";
And for His reason, thus consign,
To human reason bow.

For who hath known the Holy Mind,
Or fathomed God's Own Will?;
Our happy lot in time will find
To passively lie still;

In peace to know it's all of Him,
And He'll do all His Will;
Though with us the view's bright or dim,
His Purpose He'll fulfill.

They whom are called by grace shall know
While here they're trav'ling on;
Through this way do God's glory show,
And live to Christ alone.

His suff'rings too, they also know
While trav'ling on to home.

Deep in the everlasting mind
The great mysterious purpose lay,
Of choosing some from lost mankind,
Whose sins the Lamb should bear away.

Them, loved with an eternal love,
To grace and glory he ordained;
Gave them a throne which cannot move,
And chose them both to means and end.

In these He was resolved to make
The riches of His goodness known;
These He accepts for Jesus' sake,
And views them righteous in His Son.

No goodness God foresaw in His,
But what His grace decreed to give;
No comeliness in them there is
Which they did not from Him receive.

Faith and repentance He bestows
On such as He designs to save;
From Him their soul's obedience flows,
And He shall all the glory have.
